GOOD NEWS. Patty has six new chickens (five hens and one rooster), and they didn't cost us a cent.
I'd left a message with Danielle yesterday about our chicken ordeal. After the road workers were finished with grading and smoothing Tom Ray today, I went on a walk with Lupin. Talked with Patty at the top of the hill, and she was very friendly about everything, even inviting Mom and I to tea on Saturday. I continued on my walk, said hi to a neighbor, turned around, met up with a (possible) stray dog that Lupin was wary about (though she didn't growl at it this time), and finally met up with Dad on his way to pick up Cammy from the bus stop. We talked for a little bit and Dad said, "Guess who called?" - "Danielle!" He told me she was willing to give us as many chickens as we needed... for free.
I was VERY excited about this. First, I hadn't seen Danielle (or Karena, Andrea, Jennifer, Chelsea, lots of friends) since her birthday party in Jaunary, and I was happy that I'd get to visit her for a little bit. Second, FREE CHICKENS! Easiest replacement job in the world!
I drove to Weimar down the backroads - Magnolia to Dog Bar to East Weimar Crossroads - to Danielle's house. I saw Ullar and Tigger immediately, and Kimo was behind the gate. I'm certain Ullar recognized me, because he was very bouncy and happy when I called his name (Ullar is already bouncy, and he's HUGE, but very skinny), and he nearly knocked me over, and we were inside the house after ringing the doorbell. SO awesome to visit Dannie after all these months! My God.... The living room and old TV room were refurbished and reorganized for new buyers, and Dannie showed me to the new TV room again, which is now downstairs. Dad met us outside the garage, and we went to the chicken coops. There was also a large turkey inside, and Dannie grabbed chickens for us. The three of us walked out carrying two chickens each; they got nervous around Ullar and Kimo, but behaved quite nicely. They were just trembling. We placed them in a nice, large cardboard box Dad brought from home, and Dannie told us they'd fall asleep together.
Dad took pictures of us with his phone, and Dannie had him take a couple of us with her phone. It was just so much fun, even if it wasn't a very long visit. Dannie is living alone in that huge house, Josh is in Reno, and Woody and Sandy are living in Alabama; I had no idea that only Dannie and Josh were going to Hawaii. She told us about her work, and that Wednesdays are free days. We plan on getting together next week. Originally, I was going to go to her house, but Dad suggested that she come over here and spend the night for giving us chickens. We said goodbye and I felt very happy.
Almost back home, we dropped by Patty's house and showed her the chickens (they were sleeping). She was ecstatic! She loved all the different colors we got (Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Ariconnas (spelling? - too lazy to search right now, wireless isn't up to its usual speed yet)) and almost seemed close to tears. We got the chickens in their new home, and Patty hugged Dad and me. We were all very, very happy it worked out so well.
Coming out of Patty's driveway, we saw Mom driving home. We got turned around, into our driveway, and told Mom the good news - it made her smile wide.
Today was a very good day. Lupin is actually in my room right now; we've decided she probably knows what she did wrong. Dad made clucking noises at her this morning and tapped her lightly on the head, and she looked rather mortified afterwards. We just need to watch her closely.
